Long term staff have a wealth of knowledge and experience to ensure customers have the right information to select the products best suited to their needs.
The business has a double focus. Jenkins Rubber Shop stocks a wide variety of foam and rubber products to meet the needs of local, outback, Cape York, and Torres Strait customers. Stocked items are supplemented by an even wider range of supplied to order items. Whether it is something you need sourced in a particular size, to a custom made product, we are happy to help you wherever we can.
Products recommended will be environmentally appropriate wherever possible.Indications of durometer hardness of rubber products, the difference between natural and synthetic rubber and the significant characteristics of these differences for the customer's application are available.
Differing hardnesses and durabilities of foam can be explained and demonstrated to assess suitability for varying applications. Visit our warehouse or our friendly, helpful staff for advice on products to suit your application.

Jenkins Rubber Shop has been in business in Cairns since 1948, having only three local owners in it's 60+ year history. This continuity of long term ownership and long serving staff ensures customers deal with experienced service personnel with a history in the trade supplies of rubber and foam. We'll be here tomorrow to guarantee continued supply.
The late Bill and Kim Jenkins started out as a shoe repair business, expanded into selling rubber and foam which soon became the core activity. For about a decade, they included toys in response to popular demand. It was probably his children's demands as well, as these were the days before shopping centres and big department stores. In the 1970's, it was located in the old Plaza Theatre building on Mulgrave Road and stocked the largest range of toys in Cairns.
Various locations over the early years included three different sites in Aplin Street, and the corner of Grafton and Spence Streets.
For a few years in the early 80's, Bill's son Ken Jenkins and his wife Carmel ran a branch in Atherton.
Judy and the late Steve Nickles owned the business from Bill's retirement in 1983 through to 2005. At that time, the business was located in Aplin Street. On its move in 1986 to Sheridan Street, its focus shifted to trade and industry customers. Local boat builders were thriving. For example, the Fremantle Class Australian Navy Patrol Boats were built at the local NQEA shipyards, and contracts such as this ushered in immense growth in local marine and general engineering industries. These demands saw further growth and in 1995 the business moved to its current large premises in Aumuller Street.
Jenkins Rubber Shop supplied products for those early patrol boats and continues to supply for local Navy refit, vessel construction, and maintenance for the reef fleet, the fishing fleet, and visiting luxury yachts. Current owners, Andrew and Tracey Barnes have overseen recent growth and expanded into a large warehouse behind their premises as bulk orders of foam, matting, and rubber products increase. Semi-retired past owner Judy still remains with the company maintaining, and sharing, her 25+ years of knowledge.
Jenkins Rubber Shop has been owned and staffed by a succession of locals of long standing. This ensures knowledge and experience is available, together with good old-fashioned friendly service.
The raw material latex is combined with various chemical products to make commercial elastomers (synthetic rubbers). These have names such as:
# EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Polymer)
Each varies in their properties, and are selected for application on the basis of their comparative properties. For example EPDM resists ozone and sunlight ageing best, and is typically used as hatch seals. Nitrile resists swelling in oil and petrol and can be used for fuel tank seals.
Both natural and synthetic rubber can be manufactured in different hardnesses. A typical EPDM expanded sponge sealing strip is 40 to 50 durometer hardness. Natural insertion sheet such as used for mudflaps is 70 to 75 hardness.
Rubber products stocked include insertion and plain sheet; mats and matting; extruded sealing sections and strips (expanded sponge form); mouldings such as marine fender, fuel tank strapping and container door seals; channel and weather strips; small items such as grommets, buffers, stops, inserts and chair tips.
POLYURETHANE FOAM (Flexible open cell foam)
Application: Upholstery, bedding, seat cushions, motor trimming, carpet underlay.
Stocked in a wide range of grades from light grades for short term use, through a range of different hardnesses, to the premium/enduro (long lasting) and specialty foams such as combustion modified. Supplied cut or in sheets. Ask for advice about the foam to suit your application and your budget.
Foam products polyurethane foam are stocked as mattresses (to commercial quality) shaped (e.g. backrests, wedges, bolsters etc.), and in convoluted surface finishes (e.g. mattress overlays, invalid comfort cushion etc.).
Application: Polyester foams are specialty foams for acoustic and filtering purposes. Properties can include flame retardancy, fuel and oil resistance, and differing grades of coarseness. Polyester foams have a shorter life than the polyurethane foams which have replaced them for general use. Meracell foam is for filtering air, water, or fuel. Reticulated foam is for fish tank system filters. Acoustic foam is available in flat or convoluted surface finish.
CLOSED CELL FOAM
Application: Closed cell foams are used in many applications. Closed cell foam characteristics include buoyancy; shock absorbent; not absorbing water; resistant to petrol, oils and most chemicals; insulation against heat and cold, and UV resistance.
EVA, polyethylene and various blends and laminates of closed cell foam are stocked in sheet, on the roll, and in product form (e.g. boat fenders, foil faced insulation, expansion joint filler, sealing strips, grip matting).
Application: Packing material which also has insulating properties. It lacks the flexibility of closed cell foam in that it is 'crisp', but is a cost effective alternative in static applications. Stocked in sheet thicknesses of 10mm to 100mm. Other supplied to order
Understanding Foam Codes
Foam codes are expressed as two sets of numbers
e.g. 23-130. The first number (23) indicates Density, the second (130) indicates Hardness. There can sometimes be prefixes and suffixes. For example H42-500 where the H designates Heavy Duty and HR32-130CM where HR indicates High Resilience and CM that it is Combustion Modified. Density is not necessarily related to hardness as it is possible to produce from super soft through firm to rigid foam, all of the same density. The density is a guide to the foam's durability (or quality), the rate and extent of its hardness and height loss in service. Density is a measure of the mass per unit volume and expressed in kg/m3. The higher the number, the better the quality, longer it lasts and
. the more you pay for it!
Hardness In most situations, the choice of foam for a certain application is decided on hardness. Foam is tested for load bearing and graded accordingly. A typical choice for 150mm thick lounge seating would be 130 hardness. For dining seating of 50mm thickness, 200 hardness is the most common choice.
|products/closed cell foam|
Stocked in sheets, on the roll, and as product items (e.g. expansion joint filler and martial arts mats).
Density of closed cell foams is expressed in kilograms per cubic metre e.g. 30kg/m3
Will not absorb water
Resists petrol, oils and most chemicals
Provides excellent buoyancy
Insulate against heat and cold
Is not affected by UV light
Most closed cells can be:
Bandsaw cut, buffed, die cut, embossed, flame laminated, glued, laser cut, moulded, routed, slit, split, thermo formed and water jet cut
Applications beginning with Light Densities and finishing with High Densities include:
Expansion joints, camping and exercise mats, underlay,
flotation devices, packaging, pool mats, seals and gaskets, boat cushions, weather strips, gymnastic flooring, boat fenders, body armour, kickboards, martial arts flooring, insulation, noise barrier, insoles and orthotics

Developed for positive buoyancy in small vessels. Will not cause any electro chemical reaction when coming in contact with wood, steel, aluminium, alloy, glass fibre laminates, paints, varnishes or adhesives. Has impact resistance and will not powder or crumble, making it suitable for installation without the need to seal in an outer skin. It is easily cut with a bandsaw or handsaw.
